Surya Nepal Asha Social Entrepreneurship Award 2012: Hidden Heroes and Agents of Change Announced

A proud moment for all the team of SNASEA when all the finalists of SNASEA and NBI Agents of Change stand on stage.

The Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. Asha Social Entrepreneurship Award (SNASEA) recognised eight ‘Hidden Heroes’ and four ‘Agents of Change’ on18 December 2012. Conceived as the first ever award to recognize the Nepalese social entrepreneurs who create value for the ‘People, Planet and Profit’; the vision of SNASEA was not only to celebrate the hidden heroes for their great initiatives but also to showcase their ventures and the impact they have made.  SNASEA 2012 featured an additional recognition – ‘NBI Agent of Change’ for businesses that support startups, assist enterprise development and promote the culture of entrepreneurship in Nepal.

After an intense process of evaluation amongst 84 applicants received, SNASEA has rewarded five winners and recognised three individuals who have dedicated their lives to change. The five social entrepreneurs rewarded are listed below in no particular order. Please click on their names to know more about them.

  1. Shanti Shakya Dolma, Kakani Himalayan Natural Dyes for providing an alternative to the negative impact created by artificial dyes along with mobilizing and empowering others within the community by providing skills.
  2. Chiran Jeevi Poudel, Seeing Hands Clinic for addressing the challenges and lack of employment opportunities for the visually impaired through job creation and skill transfer.
  3. Dr Bishal Dhakal, Health at Home Private Limited (HHPL) for creating an innovative solution to the various problems faced by the patients while dealing with the healthcare services and creating easy access to healthcare.
  4. Prachanda Shakya, Nepal Traditional Handicraft Training Centre for keeping the legacy of traditional art alive through his training institute and also providing avenues of employment and learning for the younger generation.
  5. Jasmaya Pun, Hampaal Allo Tatha Kapada Bunai Udhyog for being an example, not just in Parbat but the whole of Dhaulagiri zone where she and her team have trained women in Allo production.

These 5 winners will each get a package which includes cash prize from Surya Nepal Private Limited along with the opportunity of networking through ChangeFusion Nepal.

As a special addition this year, three social entrepreneurs were recognised for their selfless contribution and for relentlessly working for more than 10 years for the betterment of the community. They are the true embodiments of the hidden heroes that SNASEA looks for. These specially recognized individuals are listed below in no particular order.   1. Govinda Ghimire, Alternative Herbal Pvt Ltd for his innovativeness in using natural resources for the betterment of the community and the people involved.
  2. Tara Baskota Adhikari, Shangri-La Agro World for using a business model which impacts all the employees and the surrounding communities of the village in Panchthar in a positive manner.
  3. Som Prasad Gauchan, Everest Tea Estate Pvt Ltd for addressing the problems related to the extreme backwardness of Bhotechaur village and creating opportunities for the local people.

The four businesses recognised by the ‘NBI Agent of Change’ as the 2012 Honorees for their contribution in igniting and cultivating entrepreneurship in the country are listed below in no particular order:

  1. Himalayan Naturals Pvt. Ltd. for their community enterprise development.
  2. Lotus Holdings Pvt. Ltd. for providing consulting services and investment to innovative ventures.
  3. Women Support Saving and Credit Cooperative Society Ltd. for supporting women entrepreneurs through loans, trainings, and market linkages.
  4. Brihat Investments Pvt. Ltd. for supporting ventures in the real estate sector.

The Award Ceremony was all about celebrating the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people working to create social, environmental and economic value. Everyone who applied for this award was a winner because each of them has contributed to their respective communities in their own way.

SNASEA team’s Note: This marks the end of the journey of SNASEA 2012. But, the team would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all those involved directly or indirectly, for helping us out in whatever ways and means they could.
